Ocean Energy

Oceans are full of energy and consistent waves in Hawaii could make generating wave energy feasible
The ocean has more to offer in terms of energy than just waves. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a process that allows electricity to be generated by temperature differences between the warm surface and cooler, deeper part of the ocean. Both methods are possible on Maui but would they produce enough energy to be worth implementing?

Current Ocean Energy Production

Makai Ocean Energy Research Center 100 kW
Location: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Island
Completed: 2015
Energy Cost: $0.20 kWh

There aren't currently any ocean-powered energy plants on Maui. Originally, and still primarily, an Ocean Energy Research Center, it was recently approved to add a Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) facility to the center. Although it only produces 100 kW (1/10 MW) it is the first OTEC faciitly in the world to be connected to a power grid.
