Waste to Energy

Currently, all of Maui's Waste is, well, wasted, but it could be used to produce energy and maybe even more
Waste-to-Energy plants can divert up to 90% of municipal waste from our landfills and instead incinerate it. In the process, these plants generate electricity, prevent the majority of harmful substances released from entering the atmosphere, and even collect residual metals to be recycled. Waste management is one of Maui's biggest problems, and this could be our best solution.

Current Waste-to-Energy Production

H-POWER Resource Recovery Venture 73 MW
Location: Campbell Industrial Park, Island of Oahu
Completed: 1990
Energy Cost: < $0.08 kWh

There aren't currently any waste-to-energy plants on Maui. However, a waste-to-energy plant has been proposed on Maui to improve the island's waste management. The proposed plant has been delayed for environmental reasons, so it's still to be seen how or if it develops. There's one completed plant in Hawaii, on Oahu, that turns 3,000 tons of municipal waste into energy every day.
