Recycling should be the best way to manage waste, but it's not as sustainable as it seems
When people on Maui bring their waste to a recycling center, it's not immediately recycled into something new. Almost all recycling from Hawaii is shipped out of the Islands. Plastics are mostly sent to Asia as well as Saudi Arabia, and aluminum is sent to the U.S. Shipping high volumes of these materials creates high carbon emissions and we rarely ever benefit from the recycled products.
